This was a fun watch to talk about because it is really a period piece. 40 years ago the original Tag Heuer Monaco watch really was "Swiss avant garde" as Tag Heuer likes to claim is something that describes themselves. Unlike standard Monaco models, this limited edition 40th Anniversary models have a few unique points that make it stand out - and really shine as a read modern version of a true classic.

The Tag Monaco was my first watch purchase, with the proceeds from my first “big gig”. The uniqueness of its pedigree and design make it truly stand out amongst the rote and ubiquitous Rolex style. This particular Monaco is a dead-ringer for the original 60s model, and the current model is practically the same (adding the Tag, keeping an acrylic crystal, red accents).
For $10k, this is obviously purely a collectors piece, but what is the news on the “replacement” Monaco also featured this year, with Calibre 12 and sapphire crystal?
The 40th anniversary Monaco is TAG’s acknowledgement that it’s “avant garde” design ethos pales to the classic and timeless styles of the original Heuer’s. Had TAG not revived the original Heuer designed models of the wildly popular “Classic Series” (re-introduced in the 90’s),this wildly overpriced re-issue would not exist. (Nor likely would the company itself). FACT
