I like them because the way they look!
I love the Phosphor watches as a non-standard way of telling the time! Also, Kramer’s method of telling by the sun often works for me, or random guessing (which makes for a fun game if you’re REALLY bored with your friends).
In all seriousness, the coolest watches in a while are, IMHO, the collection from URWERK. Fantastically modern and ultra-technical. The perfect combination for a timepiece.
Phosphor watches are sweet! This is a geek’s dream watch, eink on a watch? Crazy!
I have a bunch of mechanical timepieces that i relly love to wear, however; when i comes to readability, nothing beats large digital numbers like the ones on the Phosphor Digital Hour Clock.
I would really like to have this interesting timepiece.
The most interesting way of reading the time is my wifes Crazy Hours Jump Hour watch, the hours are shifted round the dial randomly (i.e. the 3 is at the 1 slot, the 1 is at the 7 etc) and the hour hand ‘jumps’ to the next one ‘on the hour’. It looks great but is not easily read
No problems with the Phosphor watch though. Clear legible time display whatever the angle.
Rob
Readability. Style. Price. Comfort. Modern. Chicka Chickas.
I have been interested in eink since I first came out, however it wad only recently that I started to look for an eink watch. I have to say that the look is so different that it would create conversations with people everytime someone new sees it. I like unique technology and this is why I have to have one.
I would really like to have this Phosphor Digital Hour Clock especially in BLACK..working undercover, in low-light conditions, nothing could beat this watch for stealth and time telling..EXCELLENT!
I absolutely love the LED watches of the 1970’s … the direct time readout. The Phosphor watches are this era’s classic in that way! I am glad to see that technology marches on in timekeeping!
With the Phosphore watch, I’ll finally be able to reconcile two aspects of my personality that were until now incompatible: my geek side and my passion for fashion.
I love the fact that people will stop me in the street to tell me how cool the watch is…And yes, I’ll give them a 15 minutes speech on E-Ink !!
What else do I love about that watch ? The curved screen that fit perfectly around the wrist; how easy to read it is from any angle and last but not least the sexy Orange touch !!!
i have about thirty watches. most traditional. a few digital, and a couple non-conventional. i like digital the best. starting to buy the lum-tecs. this phosphor looks wicked though and i want one on my wrist.
Without a doubt my favorite non traditional way of telling the time is a big hunky digital screen like this one! It is absolutely beautiful and so easy!
I really love Phosphor Watches. They are great simplistic and modern watches.
My favorite nontraditional watch is the Thomas Prescher Tempusvivendi American Eagle watch.
http://www.prescher.ch/Collection/Tempusvivendi/AmericanEagle/tabid/69/language/en-US/Default.aspx
My favorite non-traditional style is the jump hour with retrograde minutes. Gerald Genta’s designs are good examples of those.
A close second would be one-handed watches due to their simplicity. I seldom need to know the exact time, so they give me all the information I need.
My favorite non-traditonal manner of reading the time is on a jump-hour watch. However I would enjoy reading the time on this one.
I look at hundreds of watch so I know when I see something out standing, phosphor is that and under 200.00 USD .Can’t wait to get one
I would love to have this watch as it is a very unique and new take on the digital watch which has become looked down upon. I think the new manner of display and the polished look of the piece would make this an awesome conversation piece.
I have loved the E-Ink since tge first time I put it in my wrist. This watch is cool, hi-tech and not very bulky. It’s quite unisex, which I like. I’m generally not a fan of women’s watches but, have a woman-sized wrist. The Phosphor looks great.
I’m very excited about this watch!
Thanks, Ariel!
This Phosphor watch would be a great addition to my small (but growing) collection. My favorite non-traditional style is jump hour, despite its sometimes difficulty to read.
how much do i want one?…well, bought one right after the last giveaway (which i did not win) and is looking for another one as a present for my partner
I hinted but I didnt get one of these for Christmas! I think it is a very unique design and would be very easy to read. My only experience with retrograde is a watch that has a retrograde day of the week hand. SO, I need more experience with unconventional watches. Thank you for your blog and these monthly give aways. It is fun to participate.
I like this watch, although I prefer jumping hours “digital” in terms of non-traditional watches, I think the Phosphor has a great look and interesting tech. I would love to add it to my collection.
jump to the hour, move
like time has no meaning, like
brand new ink is born
These are cool looking digital read watches. Other innovative displays I like are on “01 The One” watches and those on Storm V2 Vice and Storm Circuit watches.
I ask the nearest person. It’s not only social but it gives them an excuse to check out my watch (and wonder why I had to ask them)
E-Ink in a watch. How awesome is that?!
My favorite non-traditional time keeping method that I’m still waiting to be found in a watch is binary display. Each digit represenetd with a series of dots.
It’s about time to get my first digital and this one looks like a great one to start with…
Good luck to all!
I *NEED* this watch so when people start showing me their iPad, I can show them something REALLY COOL!
I’m a newcomer to the world of mechanical watches and find this website fascinating.
I’m really interested in the concept of using e-ink in a watch since I already use this technology in the Kindle – which is why it would be great to own this watch.
second chance to win!! I like that.
An I guess the best way to tell the time is based on how hungry I am…
I am a mechanic watch kind of guy but this design is simply to attractive not to have one!
I prefer digital besides the conventinal
Super cool, never saw these watches before… me likey! I’ve always loved jump-hour watches, I’d kinda like to find a moderately-priced modern one someday.
Great watch! I’d want a watch that tells time in binary…
Azimuth watches are pretty awesome, mechanical digital and look like robots or that really cool planet watch.
That’s awesome! I was just looking into getting this watch too!
I really like the look of the Digital Hour Clock Black watch. I think the large digits (and inverse screen capability)give it a really unique appearance. I want one.
Are you kidding? If I had this people might think I’m from the future!!
I like a regulator style watch, like the Alpina Avalanche. Still uses hands, just in a different spot.
My favorite non-traditional watch is probably a direct read. Nonetheless, I find these e-ink watches pretty intriguing!
My favorite non-traditional style is the jump hour with retrograde minutes. Gerald Genta’s designs are good examples of those.
I would love to have this watch as it is a very unique and new take on the digital watch which has become looked down upon. I think the new manner of display and the polished look of the piece would make this an awesome conversation piece.
I think this watch is great new take on time keeping! A synthesis of high tech with traditional function, in a very cool shape. Me likey!
Chuck
Without a doubt, Urwerk completely satisfies my mechanical engineering appreciation for unique movements and method of relaying time. For digital watches, Swarovski’s D:Light is pretty tough to beat. However, since the most of us have very different budgets than the select few who can collect these time pieces, Phosphor has indeed filled our lust for digital-uniqueness. I plan to add one to my limited collection.
This watch needs to be in my collection. wow I would love to win this since match watch budget is down and buying is low due to the wife. Maybe I will win it and show it off as I enjoy the time it will bring me. Thanks Ariel
I love all the Phosphor watches, but the all black Digital Hour is my fave! It’s so stealth, but it has that cool orange edging on the strap. The E-ink display is SO easy to read! I really hope I win!
Dennis Driggers
As an anesthesiologist, I need to look at my watch about 3 million times a day. A watch like this would make it so much easier and quicker.
Phosphor’s E-Ink watches are by far the most legible digital watches (I’ve ever seen) available. As a firefighter/paramedic, I’m relatively hard on my watches. Besides beating through a myriad of watches, one of the glaring problems with timepieces I wear on the job is legibility. Thus, Phosphor does not appear to have this problem. I would be most excited to try one of these bad boys out.
And, aside from my traditional hum-drum three hand timepieces, I love the neat complications that Azimuth has been producing over the past few years. Especially the Robots. Absolutely amazing timepieces. They make checking the time fun!
I like it not only because it’s new way of showing time but also the design of whole watch, the shape and the band.
At 32 years old, I think I’m already a late bloomer when it comes to admiring watches. It just hit me. I would love to own a good watch and maybe a little collection to be proud of. If I have to start (and I will), how I would love to start the enthusiasm and love with a Digital Hour Clock Black on my wrist!
There’s something about a jump hour that does it for me!
However, I really like this phosphor e-ink watch!
In the realm of mechanical watches, I think the most interesting non-traditional watches are coming from urwerk. Too bad they are a bit cost prohibitive.
As non-standard way of reading time I like digital displays like the Nooka Zon Mirror which give just a rough indication of time at first glance. You really have to look closely to see the time.
Nooka Zon Mirror:
http://www.nooka.com/buy/zon-wt-p-105.html
But nothing can beat a Phosphor E-ink watch of course
Interesting is the first thought that comes to my mind. I have always thought that digital watches where cool thirty years ago, but this is the coolest one that I have seen.
I like jump hour displays with analog minute hand. It has a different look and is easy to read.
My favorite non-conventional way of measuring time are watches that use some sort of LED system, or the Seiko “hamburger” disc watches.
Phosphor watches is a new age watch for all the young crowd. It just has everything in right proportion.. the new modern lavishing and smart look,a sporty style , no confusion in reading time as compared to the three handed watches.
It is just new yo-cool watch.. and the name it self tells about its uniqueness….Phosphor!… i can just read it as phosph..ours!!! .. what say!
The non traditional indication of time is the way your watch can show that you are like no other. With an original design it may become a real masterpiece. We may see it in Cabestan from Jean-Francois Ruchonnet. With an original technical solution it may be a part of art like Urwerk ones. Some watches can have a very primitive appearance but still be an ingenius complete form of a timepiece (Azimuth for example). Even very cheap wristwatches could have a good exterior and performance with a good ideas of non traditional time indication. But this Phosphor one combines perfect time indication, easy time reading, perfect look, super materials and i think it looks great on a hand. Strap is very nice (like my Piquadro Blue Square bag). Awesome timepiece. Must have for all.
I love the Digital Hour Black because it has a sweet futuristic design. The way the watch maintains a minimal and curvy profile while looking sleek and futuristic is very cool!
Would love to own this Phosphor Digital Hour Clock watch in BLACK as I am a Ninja and require watches that will not reflect so much when I am doing my ……………. Ninja-ing.
Ok so really Im a watch nut and a gadget geek so this watch puts the two together. I really like the display as it puts the emphasis on the minutes. Most of the time I know what the hour is and I just need to know when the meeting will finally be over.
Thanks,
Tom
My favorite non-traditional time display would be “wandering” dials (see the Seiko “Discus Burger” for the most modern and well done interpretation)
i like the s+arck and giordano’s non traditional watches… especially the led displays… however, the one issue I have is that whenever i press the button to tell time, there is no way to turn the beeping off…
This is one of the few digital watches I would wear.
I think the coolest type of non-conventional method for telling time is some of the offerings by Azimuth. They have a watch with a hand that looks like a rocket-ship and a hand that displays the time backwards. I also enjoy 24-hour watches that have an hour hand that makes 1 rotation around a 24-hour dial.
I didn’t think I could like a digital watch untill i saw these
The resolution of the e-ink display does go a long ways towards making digital easy on the eyes. And the case is elegantly minimal, too.
This is the watch that first got me interested in watches in general and to this blog. Just don’t have the money to take it beyond reading about them yet. Great to have a second chance at this one.
I like how it is unique – would fit my personality. all the other physicians wear very traditional watches – i like to mix it up.
In an effort to turn my father into a watch geek (he’s not into watches as he has really bad eyesight), I showed him this and he thought it was great but looked too young for him..
Oh well, at least I tried!
The E Ink Black Clock Watch looked great. The immediate one that stood out to me was the one with a black leather band. The orange was a nice contrast with the black leather!
I like how it combines analog style with digital, yet it doesnt look overly grainy and spotty like some other digital watches.
My peers can definitely spot that i’m wearing a Phosphor watch from that striking contrast!
The Phosphor Digital Hour Clock Black looks like it will be easy for me to read without my glasses. I love alternate watch displays, but they have to be practical for me to want one. This one passes the test! Hope I win!!!!!
Thanks,
kev
i’m single, so this watch would really help me get girls!
One word sums up this watch WOW !!!!
This sub contempory watch is at the pinnicle of design. With its leading non traditional make up, and ease of design. This ubber black watch is, in my humble opinion the BEST…….
This beats the kindle any day. e-ink displays right in the palm of my hand, or rather on the top of my wrist. Winner or not, I’m in for one.
If I don’t have a traditional timepiece on, I wear the Classic Digital Casio and have it display military time. Light, simple and it has a light.
-Nelson
So classy..the over 55 guys at the golf course are going to love this.
If by traditional you mean “standard three analog hands on dial,” then would non-traditional mean only two hands, or perhaps a sub-seconds dial instead of a center seconds? If so, then most of my watches would be non-traditional. Of those that I own, the two handed Precista PRS-20 LE would be my favorite. Super clean dial that’s very easy to read with wonderful blued hands.
But for a truly non-traditional looking watch, my absolute favorite would be something from Urwerk. I’d gladly take any of them if offered, but my absolute favorite is the UR-103. It’s unlike any other watch before it and has a unique and easy to read time display. The massive crown is out of the way and it can be easily regulated by adjusting a screw – without having to open the case.
I also will take a look at the Phosphor Watch (even if I don’t win one
as that looks like it could be a very nice, easy to read watch. The first time I saw an e-ink kindle I was amazed at how easy to read it was. The contrast was very good, it didn’t need to be back lit and could be read at an angle other that straight on. This technology is perfect for a digital watch and the Phosphor Watch does a nice job with it. The digits are nicely formed and certainly large and easy to read. By not displaying the seconds and having the hours on top of the minutes, the digits are about as large as they could possibly be. The curved case looks like it could be very comfortable and it just looks like a cool looking watch.
Thanx for this opportunity. I can’t wait to be the the first in Australia to own one of these fantastic looking chronographs. I love the transiting face and the quirky design with complimenting band.
Phosphor rules andd so will my wrist if I win
Thanx
P.s. great work Ariel
Nice, not had one to try yet but I’d imagine it will be just as easy to read in direct sunlight as my Ereader is.
The Phosphor Digital Hour Clock Black is a crazy cool and sexy watch! I’ll show it off with my suntan and bikini.
I entered the last time but didn’t win; here’s me trying again!
Never imagined I’d be hot for a digital watch. Mush less a :square” one at that. Despite violating two of my “no’s”, I’m going to have to get one of these. I never win anything, so I’m going to make good use of the discount.
After seeing the amazing displays on the e-ink e-readers like the Kindle, I’m incredibly excited about these watches taking off. I think this will become my favorite non-traditional way of telling time. Let’s hope they sell a lot of e-ink devices so that the prices on these watches come down even more.
this is my favorite non-traditional:
http://www.tokyoflash.com/en/watches/tokyoflash/rogue/
not sure it has a name (interconnecting LCD blocks)…but super cool!
DolphinV27@aol.com
I love the styling! My favorite non-traditional way of presenting time is the retrograde. Its been a while since I’ve owned a digital watch….so I think it would be pretty sweet to win this one with e-ink to boot. Nice.
I’m a digital watch fan myself. I like displays that don’t necessarily look like normal watches (eg, Nooka’s watches), and some that have totally unnecessary graphics (eg, some of the round display Casio Film watches).
I collect wristwatches. As I’ve said I always fall for a pretty face and man, the Phosphor line is most pleasing to look at.
What a cool watch! I admit I’d never heard of it until seeing it here. Thanks for the review and explaining how it works. I kind of like the DualTow as a non-traditional watch but the watch I actually wear is a thin, round, gold Omega “hours and minutes” bought for me in 1977.
I have always preferred the concept of the watch as a bracelet; something seamless, more scuptural. The storm circuit mk2, rado ceramica, and the bell and ross 126 vintage with a wide blackleather strap come to mind. If I push the watch from being just a timepiece to a sculptural bracelet, can I look forward to its e-ink technology displaying other content? Perhaps wrist tatoos? Very cool concept…would like to see it pushed farther.
I like jump hour watches for their ease in telling time at a glance. I haven’t worn a digital since the early 80s, but would wear the Phosphor in a minute.
As long as there is constant movement, i.e some sort of “second hand” I’ll love it! Plus the Phosphor’s negative screen is just too sexy.
I like the unique way you read the time from it. Its different and the styling is very cool as well.
It looks neat, I like free things would be MY main motivator here. I like old LED watches, have one but it died a permanent death in the 90s I just hold onto it as a paperweight now
Digital: Fantastic way of telling the time, looks great with a suit & super precise and easy to read!!
My favourite non conventional watch is my original Tokyo Flash LED watch, but the Phosphor e-ink makes this look completely ‘turn of the century’. Simply stunning watch.
The readability design and appearance are stunning. The resolution of this time piece is beyond amazing,it is outright intriguing.Pop by your local bookstore or T@rget to see an ebook reading device to appreciate the way this display technology works and appears…beyond description.I would sell and recommend this watch to anyone who needs to know what time it is..and wants something truely unique.
My favorite non conventional type of watch is one with a digital display.
Simple…Stylish…Effective.
The Phosphor e-Ink watch takes it to a whole new level.
Definitely the style.
I live near the North Pole, under the Aurora Borealis… the Phosphor Watch will be as unique as the life I live… helping guide me under the Northern Lights.
I own a Phosphor watch. It’s well worth the money. Easy to read, and you can change the appearance with the push of a button. I also like the hour chirp.
The design of this watch is beautiful.
phopher is an ergonomic, sleek watch and will become a classic with the touch of nostalgia it has, it has proven to be on line with the classic watches. i like the look and style it will mke a mark on the history of watches.
I am a fan of unusual things. When I saw LED watches for the first time, it cought my breatch, but this is even more amazing. Even after I went through the review at http://ablogtoread.com/seal-of-approval-award/phosphor-digital-hour-clock-e-ink-watch-review/ I was even more impressed. Thank you for sharing that!
Miro
After your last podcast, I’m not touching the question of 3-hand watches. I happen to be partial to the colorful wit of Alain Silberstein. But e-ink would be a nice change of pace, a different wit.
I thought: Phosphor, big deal. But then: isn’t light, illumination, the basis for all telling of time, all navigation? Maybe that’s not in the watchmaker’s consciousness here, but still, any illumination of any timepiece recalls the first ways we learned to tell time.
I think the watch looks amazing! And to boot, since I dont have a Kindle, I would love to try out something with E-ink!
Thanks
I’ve been wanting the Digital Hour ever since I saw your seal-of-approval article on it. Too bad I saw it after buying Ora Unica. I like my watches unique and well designed, digital or analog. Digital Hour definitely is a timeless design.
A great digital timepiece from the 70’s making a popular and face come-back in 2010. Love Jump Hours but this is a very retro yet trendy digital timepiece that I strongly favor and would easily wear
My favorite alternative is old time LED digital watches. There are some really nice ones out there.
I have to say the Phosphor holds great promise for me. I, unfortunately, am one of the growing numbers of aging men who’s arms are getting too short over time. It’s getting harder and harder to read my watches without the use of my “cheaters”. This is especially true of digital watches. I recently purchased a multi function LCD watch and find it difficult to read, even when I activate the light. This Phospor watch promises great readability in any light. I look forward to it.
I love this watch. You will always be able to tell the time on this watch face. I also like the red accent around the side of the band.
eink on a watch! What more could be said??? Sweet!
Modern, with an Alarm and very Green Friendly
!
I like the retrograde style the best!
I prefer watches like the Phosphor for their easy to read digital displays. The Phosphor looks particularly nice due to its simply, uncluttered design and wonderfully legible e-ink display.
I like the phosphor watch because of its unorthodox way of presenting the time, even in comparison to other digital watches. The time is bold, clear, but at the same time subtle…
This Phosphor digital watch is so unique!I love the Phosphor watch designs, colors etc…everything about them! This watch with the black tone over the steel case is classy .The big numbers are a bonus!I love it and would be proud to have it adorn my wrist.
I like Digital Hour Clock Black because they are so odern and stylish! Best of the Best!!!
I love the look of the Phosphor watch. So simple and easy to read, yet unlike any other watch I have seen. A digital watch that actually looks refined and stylish. I would love to own one of these!
I’ve always preferred digital over traditional watches. I found this page by searching for ‘minimal black leather digital watch’. This watch is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for… though it’s a bit out of my price range at this point. I’m keeping my fingers crossed – this is a great looking watch!
My favorite non-tradtional manner of reading the time is digital. It is much faster than analog. Phosphor delivers novel, extremely stylish watches at a reasonable price point. I would love to own one.
Very Cool watch — would love one!!!
Just a great look watch!
love the “throw back” nature of digital on the wrist … all those great casios from years ago!
Its the Future!
Why would I like this watch? Because it’d be totally unlike anything in my collection currently.
I like it because it isn’t pretentious. Seeing men trying to find self-confirmation through buying ridiculously overpriced watches is just pathetic.
Other than analogue I’d prefer digital.
I am a watch enthusiast, but how we look at time is pretty much basic and there’s nothing new. Obviously lcd has given us the chance to see different (the digital look), and then we have the ultra crazy and expensive watches like “Urwerk”, “Cabestan” and “Azymuth”, some of which you haev to take a course to figure out how to tell time. But this watch takes away the simple 2:48 look of digital and makes it interesting without making it extremely hard to know what time it is. It is definitely different, but understandable. Very appealing.
I like to tell the time without taking time to tell it. So digital is the way to go as the big friendly numbers let my “i can’t read 5 rotating dials at the same time while upside down on some awesome Monkey Bars” brain read them with full and complete adulation. But then again winding a watch upside down is not good for my health so digital watches and err Monkey Bars rock.
My favorite non-standard way of a watch expressing the time is the way Ulysse-Nardin’s Freak watch does it. Or, eat least it would be if I could afford one. Tokyo Flash’s watches are also good, if you like having to keep a decoder with you to read your watch. This one should be easier to read.
My favorite non-standard display was the Casio Pathfinder. LCD-based, but with three tiers for displaying information so it can show date over time over seconds, or switch to show temperature and barometric pressure under a barometric timeline, for instance. E-ink displays seem to be an improvement, though, both because the power consumption can be much lower, and because what can be displayed is limited only by the software of the watch itself, potentially.
Even since I first saw the Berlin Uhr in 1978 with its set theory approach to time, that has been my favorite way to look at time.
But I would love to have a Phosphor watch!
As of last count, I own approximately 50 watches and more will be added to my collection as I have just won a very nice watch from an ebay auction and actively watching (no pun intended) about 4 more. Why so many? I only have two hands, as my mom would always point out to me whenever I buy a new watch. Why so many? Because I love a thing of beauty. I do not own a Louis Vuitton Tambour, a Rolex or even a Tag Heuer. Yes, they are great watches, but let’s face it, for some people who own them, it’s just a form of self-validation. The most expensive watch I have in my collection is a Hamilton Everest, the rest cost anywhere between $40 and $200…with over 90% of my watches costing around $60 to $95. I do not seek validation from a watch…I just appreciate an object of beauty…the way one appreciates a work of art. Most of my watches are interesting in a way that is appealing and pleasantly piques the interest of the beholder…they’re never interesting in a ridiculous way. It is for this same reason that……I’VE GOT TO OWN THIS PHOSPHOR DIGITAL HOUR CLOCK!!!! IT RIGHTLY BELONGS TO MY WATCH COLLECTION…
